Section: The Great Themes of the Union
Theprogramme “The Great Themes of the Union” hosted scholars, academics, experts and political and cultural personalities of national and international reputation who played or still play a significant role in crucial sectors for the European construction. Given the important political and economic challenges that the European integration process is currently facing, and whose solution will represent the decisive element for the Union’s future developments, within each programme some of the most interesting themes related to the activities of the European Union that are most problematic for the coming years, were analysed.
In particular, Mr Franco Frattini, former Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and at present Vice President of the European Commission and Commissioner responsible for the sector of freedom, security and justice, dealt with the difficult creation of a European Area for Security and Justice in the light of the international threats of events such as terrorism and organised crime.
Mr Beniamino Caravita, professor of public law, spoke about European citizenship and the protection of the fundamental rights, whereas Mr Filippo Maria Pandolfi, former Vice President of the European Commission analysed more in depth the questions related to foreign, security and defence policies, transatlantic relationships and the international role of the EU.
Mr Roberto Santaniello, Director of the European Representation in Italy, Milan office, described the main steps through which the signing of the European Constitution was achieved. Mr Mario Monti, President of the “Bocconi” University of Milan, former European Commissioner for the Internal Market from 1995 to 1999, and then for Competition policy from 1999 to 2004, explained the Economic and Monetary Union and the Coordination of the Economic Policies, the single currency, the role of the European Central Bank and the competition policy.
Finally, Mr Giorgio La Malfa, former Euro-parliamentarian and Italian Minister for the Community Policies, gave his own insight on the current crisis of the European Constitution, which is linked to the difficult economic period that Europe is experiencing these years, and also on the Lisbon Strategy.
